The
Mohican State Park is one of the most beautiful recreation
areas in all of Ohio.
With continued expansion of facilities and refinement of
nature trails,
Mohican remains a perennial favorite to both visitors and
locals.
The
covered bridge that crosses the Clearfork River in the midst
of the forest
is a Mohican icon. Built in 1963 less than a mile downstream
from Pleasant Hill
Dam, the bridge is a focal point for picnickers and hikers.
The bridge vicinity is the trailhead for the Hemlock Gorge
Trail, Pleasant Hill Trail and Hog Hollow Trail.
It's
also where you'll find the popular worn path to Lyons Falls.
The Falls are named
after James Lyons, a recluse who lived in a primitive forest
cabin back in the 1800s.
Lyons gained infamy for his deathbed confession to murdering
a local rival. He
was buried in the hills above the Falls, and although the
gravesite can no longer
be found, both Big and Little Lyons Falls remain spectacular
sights to see.
